Literally, Chicken of the Sea

Local agribusiness concern Hubbs-SeaWorld continues its press to become the Smithfield of striped bass. That may be an exaggeration, but I tend to think not.

Chris Nelson, a thoughtful local blogger, posted about the project here. He makes an interesting suggestion, basically that if we Californians run the farm with some oversight, there is a better chance that it will be managed with concern for the environment than if it is left only to less-regulated jurisdictions.

I thought about this for a while, because it’s an interesting point. I decided that if an industrial fish farm is, overall for society, a Good Thing, then, yes, we should do it. But if it is a Bad Thing — which I think the evidence of industrial farming suggests that it is — we should not do it, and also we do our best to withhold support from those who do.
