Meet Your Produce

It’s easy — for me at least — to think of this time of year as kind of bleak in terms of produce, ’cause a lot of glam fruit is rather summery: peaches, corn, watermelon. Well, think again, ’cause we’re learning that, at least here in Cali, our farmers are harvesting great food.
Here’s a few ingredients that have made me swoon this week:
* You may not think potatoes are sexy, but I am in love with the German Butterball potatoes from Weiser Farms in Lucerne and Tehachapi, CA. These potatoes are seriously buttery, just like the name says. And a little sweet and totally delicious. They usually find themselves, along with Pee Wee potatoes from Weiser, in the Lowcountry boil.
* Our most-talked-about market produce right now are watermelon radishes from McGrath Family Farm on the Oxnard Plain. They eat really well and their appearance is really, well, watermelony. Like little teeny watermelons. Super cool. They are on often on the chips and dip and occasionally turn up elsewhere, too, look around the menu.
* I think of sweet corn as a late summer thing, but apparently that doesn’t have to be true in San Diego — Barry up at La Milpa has brought us great sweet corn now! The kitchen is putting it on sopes with a chile arbol crema and (wasn’t I just talking about this) watermelon radishes under the catch of the day.
* It is now citrus season. We’ve got Persian Lemons, Oro Blanco grapefruits, and Valencia oranges from Polito Family Farms in Valley Center, and Satsuma tangerines and Eureka lemons from Penryn Orchard Specialties near Sacramento. Keep an eye out and you’ll see ‘em.
