As we gear up for Wednesday’s bash, a little background on our cocktail and spirits program at El Take It Easy.
Our spirits program is built around the three defining distilled spirits of North America: tequila, mescal, and American Whiskey (including bourbon, rye, etc). One great benefit to these spirits is that they are all made fairly close to where we live, so we expect to be able to bring the distillers in to meet you, and to go to the distilleries ourselves and share them with you on this blog.
The other great benefit to these spirits is that they taste amazing by themselves, neat or on the rocks. They don’t require any other mixers to bring out what makes them awesome.
As for the cocktails: Our primary goal with the cocktail list is to make everything both fun and delicious. We like drinks that look great, taste great, and have interesting stories. We also like drinks that pair well with our food, which these do.
Our other, hidden agenda with the cocktails is to provide alternate approaches to drinking tequila, mescal and American whiskey, so that you might experience them in a new way, and find new qualities about them to explore. That’s not required to enjoy these cocktails, but it’s out there.
To me, moving into spirits has opened up a whole new phase of our culinary exploration. I particularly geek out on the single-village mescals, which to me have the most sense of terroir of any distilled spirit I know, since the flavor of both the plant and the wood used to smoke it can be distinct to the locale where it’s made.
But that’s all for another place and time, and another blog post. In the meantime, let’s enjoy a cocktail, shall we?
