We really don’t need to truck much food in at all. (Pretty amazing to think that midcentury, personal gardens provided 40% of Americans’ food). Seems to me that the Linkery or any community restaurant could be a vessel through which our community feeds itself from our own gardens.

About three or four months ago I signed up for a garden plot at the Escondido Community Garden for $30 a year. It’s amazing what you can grow in just 80 square feet.
Not only is it inexpensive, it is quite possibly the most rewarding thing I have ever done. The sense of community at this place is something that I have never experienced and nothing gives me as much pride as watching my two-year old son eat vegetables that I grew.
Right now I have five kinds of heirloom tomatoes, six kinds of chiles and peppers and this weekend I’m planting heirloom cauliflower, green beans, basil, sweet white corn, and a few different herbs.
The experience of participating in a community garden has completely changed the way I look at food and I feel so lucky to have had this experience.
Keep up the good work and I hope that one day I will be eating a salad at The Linkery with bibb lettuce from Jay’s front yard.

It will have to be from my back yard, I don’t want to tear out all the cool natives that Wes planted in my front yard.
Seriously, that’s the thing, we’ll all grow some food and eat it. Nothing that hasn’t been done before, and deliciously.
